Reference to old road pavements

On the two path routes from Hornbach to Saarbrücken/Sarrguemines, selected positions are decorated with special ornaments made of field stones. On the one hand, these are narrow bands of fieldstones that cross the path before and after the respective villages. In the interactive map, the village entrance bands are marked with a red square with a star and the village exit bands with a red empty square.

On the other hand, along the way you can also find larger segments of stitched field stones. Cited here are the historical path fortifications in the region. Already since Roman times, paths in this cultural landscape have been fortified by means of carefully joined, stitched shell limestone, which was also obtained from the surrounding fields. These soil citations can be found in the core zone on the paths of the pilgrims of St. James near Medelsheim, Herbitzheim, Gräfinthalat the Dragonerweg and shortly before Wintringer farm and are marked with a yellow triangle in the interactive map.

However, there is another reference: As historical sources prove, the medieval churches in the Bliesgau originally had a tower hood made of limestone, similar to the still existing church tower hood in Hornbach-St. Johann. Along the way, these stone steeple hoods of the old village church in Medelsheim, Bebelsheim and Bliesransbach cited in the route signs there and are marked with a yellow triangle in the interactive map.

The star ornaments Medelsheim, Auersmacher, Blieskastel and the “Ghost Bridge are also marked with a yellow triangle in the interactive map.
